We put together our new island last night. Easy assembly, maybe took about 30 minutes start to finish. I should add that my husband assembled it himself, I just watched :) I am impressed with the quality of the piece, very sturdy. The rubber feet keep the piece from sliding all around the kitchen, which is nice. The paint finish is matte, and the wood finish is nicely done. The work surface is not solid butcher block, it's about an inch thick. I think that's what kept the price from being outrageous. The top of the butcher block is a bunch of small strips, kind of looks like a mosaic. It is a really nice touch!

One of the side panels was a little damaged, the black paint was cracking in a few spots. I called Powell customer service, and spoke to someone within 5 minutes, who offered to send us a replacement free of charge. Refreshingly uncomplicated customer service! This is a very sturdy, handsome table. The top has a very smooth finish, the color is a deep red and very attactive. The reason I titled this "butcher block-appearance" is that, although the top appears to be 4" thick, but is actually hollow. The wood top is only about 1-1/4" thick. I you rap on the top, it definitely sounds hollow. This explains why this table to so much less expensive than others, which presumably have full thickness butcher block tops.This is more a truth in labeling issue. I was disappointed that it didn't have the heft of a full thickness solid wood top, but practically speaking, I don't plan on doing any heavy cutting or chopping. Assembly is straight forward, but my box did not contain directions. Googling "powell butcher block assembly instructions" led me to a website that has a link to PDF instructions. Be carefully using power to place screws that enter the legs, as this wood is relatively soft and will strip.
